RSE and PSHE (draft whilst in consultation)
At St Mary of the Angels, Personal, Social Health Education (PSHE) including Relationships Sex Education (RSE) is at the heart of our school values and ethos and runs throughout all that we do.
Our PSHE/RSE curriculum aims to enable our children to become healthy, safe, independent, responsible members of society who demonstrate respect and tolerance and who are prepared to face and manage the challenges and opportunities of an ever-changing modern Britain.
We aim for our children:
To be enthusiastic, inquisitive, lifelong learners
To be strong communicators
To develop well-rounded, independent and resilient learners with aspirations.
To develop and use their God given talents by being creative:
To be responsible citizens who are eager to make a positive contribution to their community and wider society.
Protected Characteristics
At St Mary of the Angels, reading is prioritised across the curriculum especially in PSHE and RSE. Each class has a selection of books to support children in their learning with in PSHE and RSE. The children can find the books in the class reading corners. This allows children the opportunity to deepen their understanding with this subject.
Our strong delivery model ensures that our protective characteristics as a Catholic school are maintained whilst we empower our children in developing an informed conscience to facilitate discernment as they grow in God’s love. We are resolutely committed to ensuring that all children learn about every protected characteristic throughout their time here at St Mary's. You can read more about how we do this in the document below.
My Happy Mind
In addition to TenTen for RSE, we are also proud to be a BRONZE accredited Happy Mind School. We use the myHappymind programme across the school, in all classes as part of our PSHE programme of delivery.
In our classes, we have PSHE Journals where we celebrate the broad and enriching opportunities that our delivery model facilitates. We also have our class Catholic Life Journals and our individual Happy Mind journals that evidence and celebrate our learning and our growth.
As a whole school programme grounded in science and dedicated to building positive mental wellbeing, myHappymind helps children understand how their brains work and creates a culture that helps to build children's resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. myHappymind also teaches the children how to self-regulate and manage their emotions in stressful times, allowing them to be their very best selves!
You can find our more about My Happy Mind here: https://myhappymind.org Our myHappymind Programme is organised into 5 modules that are taught over the school year. These are:
Meet Your Brain: Understanding how your brain works and how to ensure we look after it so that we can manage our emotions and be at our best. Growth mindset is a key part of this too.
Celebrate: Understanding your unique Character Strengths and learning to celebrate them. This is a fantastic module for building self-esteem.
Appreciate: Understanding why gratitude matters and how you can develop gratitude as a habit.
Gratitude is key to well-being and resilience and we're all about making it a lifelong strategy!
Relate: Understanding why positive relationships matter and how to build them. We're focussed on the building blocks of good relationships and friendships.
Engage: Understanding how to set meaningful goals that matter and how to stay resilient in times of challenge. This module is all about building self-esteem and resilience too
Life to the Full - TenTen
"Life to the Full" is our diocesan approved RSE scheme of work. It covers all aspects of RSHE in a relevant, age-appropriate manner. Within each learning stage, there are x3 over-arching modules. They are:
Module One: Created and Loved by God
Created and Loved by God explores the individual. Rooted in the teaching that we are made in the image and likeness of God, it helps children to develop an understanding of the importance of valuing themselves as the basis for personal relationships.
Module Two: Created to Love Others
Created to Love Others explores the individual’s relationship with others. Building on the understanding that we have been created out of love and for love. This Module explores how we take this calling into our family, friendships and relationships, and teaches strategies for developing heathy relationships and keeping safe.
Module Three: Created to Live in Community
Created to Live in Community explores the individual’s relationship with the wider world. Here we explore how human beings are relational by nature and are called to love others in the wider community through service, through dialogue and through working for the Common Good.
